Hiking in the Ancient Trail in Mycenae

On Sunday, February 16, the Wanderlust team will hike the Mycenaean Road, one of the oldest routes connecting Mycenae with the adjacent basin in the village of Prosymni.

The Mycenae-Prosymna road is the best preserved of the roads of the Mycenaean era.

The route will start from the entrance of the archaeological site and follow a road to the eastern end of the Acropolis.

We reach a small shortcut where the Dragonera bridge is located.

The movement in the first 4.5 km will be gently uphill and throughout the entire duration we see the Argolic plain overgrown with citrus and olive trees.

At the end of the uphill we move on the oldest single-arch bridge of Lykotroupi, which is built with the excretory system of the era and Cyclopean style with the use of huge stones measuring 1x1 meters.

Soon we enter a lane with many olive groves around us, approaching the ancient watermill and the Mycenaean vaulted tomb, admiring the unique Cyclopean art.

Our path now continues downhill, approaching the Roman baths, which were probably part of an extensive rural villa with a blacksmith shop, an olive press and probably a place of worship on which the adjacent church of Agios Ioannis is built.

At the end of the route and just before we reach the village of Prosymni, the old Roman cistern looms imposingly and to our right are the remains of the Hellenistic tower.
